The long-awaited general elections will take place on 24 March 2019. The pre-election period, while largely peaceful, has not been without interesting developments. The controversial prime ministerial nomination of Princess Ubol Ratana by a pro-Thaksin party prompted a strongly-worded statement by the king and the party is now facing a likely dissolution.  The police has also stated intentions to arrest the leader of the Future Forward Party, a party popular with young voters for allegedly spreading false information about the military government. Amidst increasing perceptions that the military government is interfering with the electoral process, our most likely scenario sees a Puea Thai Party-led minority government with Gen Prayuth Chan-Ocha being reappointed as prime minister. Post-election Thailand could therefore see a military-dominated government that does not reflect on the results of the popular vote, which will likely contribute to a destabilising security and operating environment.
